Alex had just received some combustible information. He had tasked an agent to contact the ambassador’s secretary to question her to determine how much exposure she’d had to the poison. During their investigation, she had revealed that when she’d arrived at the building earlier that morning, she had no idea the ambassador was dead. She had been there to arrange the shipment of the painting to the ambassador’s apartment in Geneva, however Lucca and another police officer had stopped her at the gate and sent her home. She’d never had a headache. And the final piece of information she had revealed was the reason Alex was running down the stairs as if his life depended on it.

He was stopped before he reached the first floor, which had already been decontaminated with oxygen. Alex was stripped out of his suit and sprayed with pure oxygen before racing the rest of the way down the stairs to the first floor, out the front entrance, and into the cool afternoon. He was told the fiancée was being held in cab number three, which was third from the last. He had a knot in his gut.

“She said Winchester didn’t have a fiancée,” Ron, his chief interrogator, had told him.

Alex was near the gate when he snatched his radio off his hip to contact Kasan, who was last with Gabriella Carducci.

“Five, this is SC, over,” he said. Alex had made it to the back of the truck and was running up the four metal steps.

There was no answer.

Alex banged on the door. He counted to three. Nothing happened.

He whipped his radio to his mouth. “CC, this is SC. Open STS three.”

The lock clicked. Alex clipped his radio back on his belt and took out his weapon. He quickly opened the door, ready to shoot.

“Fuck,” he shouted.

Kasan lay unconscious on the floor while bleeding out, and the woman was gone.
